Community / Charity
One thing that
members of the Indiana believe in is that the club has a responsibility
to get involved with the community and charity.
To that end, the
Indiana has cultivated a number of pet charities and activities.
One of the major ones
is the Special Olympics, both in Indiana and in Kentucky.
While still with the U.S.S. Questar, XO Walter Ewing took the Special Olympics
Polar Bear Plunge into the Ohio River at Louisville, Kentucky in 2002,
with then Questar members Linda Cape and Jeff Davis along for
support.
In 2003, medical
situations forbid it, but in 2004, now as members of the U.S.S.
Indiana, Captains Davis and Ewing both took the plunge, accompanied by
Gerry Wampler and Gerry Sylvester from the U.S.S. Highlander.
Another hot charity
for us is anything related to diabetes. At least two members are
diabetics and this has led to the Indiana's participation in the annual
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's
"Walk For The Cure". This event raises money to be used
in research to fight Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes. The Indiana has
participated in both 2003 and 2004.
One event that has
provided a great quantity of fun is the Louisville Zoo's "World's
Largest Halloween Party". The Entire Zoo is opened up and
turned into a safe and fun trick-or-treat for the children of
Louisville. Since 2001, members of the U.S.S. Questar, later
joined by members of the U.S.S. Indiana, have manned the area themed
for outer space, at one time referred to as "Space Station
Zebra. Like all the themed areas, S.S. Zebra had a Trick-or-Treat
booth, stocked by the Louisville Office of Coca-Cola. They bring
out an 18-wheeler trailer full of canned drinks, we open the boxes and
hand out the canned pop. Coke C2 was the treat for 2004, a new
form of Sprite Remix for 2003. And the kids love it. This,
combined with their creative costumes and Star Trek fans showing up
either in uniform or in some Sci-fi costume makes for a night of safe,
clean fun for all.
Additionally,
members have participated in the yearly U.S.M.C. "Toys '4'
Tots" Campaign.
