Fan Fiction
A common thing in Star Trek Fan organizations is to find
creative people, and one of the common creative activities these
individuals undertake is the writing of fan fiction.
Fan Fiction is any literary device based on the storyline
created by someone else. It may or may not include characters
from the original story line.
Captain Jeff Davis began writing Star Trek Fan Fiction in
2001 while still serving aboard the U.S.S. Questar. His stories,
which he calls the "Captain Ryan Chronicles", began by
involving the crew of the Questar in various adventures with the
intended stars of the series, Captain Ezekiel Ryan and the crew of the
U.S.S. Proxima.
Captain Davis' first two stories, both novel length, were
written while still on the Questar. The first one, "Orion's
Folly", was awarded "Fanzine of the Year" at the
2003 Region 01 Summit.
The second, “Demon
Possessed,” was not submitted for awards.
After transferring to the Indiana,
Capt. Davis continued his writing with three short stories. The first
two were submitted simultaneously for regional award. The first, "Through
the Looking Glass", a time travel story, won the Fanzine of
the Year award at the 2004 Region 01 Summit. The second, “Not
Quite A Dickens Classic,” and affectionately called the “Christmas episode,
tells a trekkie version of the Charles Dickens Christmas classic, while
signalling the beginning of a new twist in the lives of the Proxima
crew. The third, Cloak
of Deceipt, was written as the proposed thesis for the PHD from the
Gorn Academy at SFI’s Starfleet Academy, and intertwines the story of
Captain Ryan with a familiar Romulan, Sela, in a plot against the Gorn.
Unfornately, threatened legal action over name usage (it had
been practice, at another’s behest, to use SFI members and ships as
side characters in the stories) resulted in the first two novels and
two short stories being pulled from the public domain and all used
names and titles being removed.
They have since been remade with the objected nomenclature replaced
with fictitious ones, but remain out of general public domain, only
being available on special request. Only Volume 5, “Cloak of Deceipt” is available in
the public domain.
Fortunately, Capt. Davis loves his characters too much to
let them die. So, Volume 6 is proceeding hand
in hand with Volume 8.
Volume 6, “A
Dish Best Served Cold”, another novel length story, pick’s up two
years after “Orions’ Folly”, in a classic case of the bad guy coming
back for one more shot at the title. More importantly, it will formally and completely
end the participation of characters previously found objectionable and
allow succeeding Chronicles to return to the public domain. Volume 8, “For
Whom The Bells Toll”, picks up at the end of “A Dish Best Served
Cold” and opens whole new chapters in the lives of certain regular characters, including a
new command and a major change in life.

More
recently, Capt. Davis has begun a new series of stories. Commonly called “crossover”
stories, they blend some side of Star Trek with another element of the
Sci-Fi genre.
His
first story, “To
Then And Back Again”, sees Dr. Sam Becket of Quantum Leap arriving
aboard the U.S.S. Titan, in the body of Counselor Deanna Troi-Riker,
shortly after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis! This won the Fanzine of the Year award at the 2006
Region 01 Summit.
Most
recently, he has completed “Definitely
Not Swedish”, as the Stargate SG-1 Team gates to the future and meets
up with the crew of the starship Voyager while trying desperately to not be
assimilated!
In
the works is a blend of Star Trek: DS9 with the original Planet of the Apes
movies, called “Stunted Evolution” and some additional ideas that may
include the likes of the Captain Ryan Chronicles, The Original Star Trek,
or The Next Generation with Duck Dodger, Logan’s Run and even the Charmed
Ones.
Oh,
what a twisted web we weave!

And Captain
Davis is not the only gifted writer on the Indiana. Recently, to commemorate the launching
of James Doohan’s ashes into space, Chief Science Officer Var (aka V.R.
Brown) penned a short, neat tribute called “Miracle Worker.”
